[00:00:34] Scott Maderer: [00:00:34] her feelings and places that don't necessarily seem to click right away and find a way to serve around those groups and build relationships and ask questions because the truth is the funny thing is. [00:01:30] In today's episode about investing in yourself by stewarding your time. I talked with you about why giving of your time can be a kindness. I share how you can give of your time and get more back than you expected. Also share why giving of your time can challenge us to see the world differently. As we talk about stewarding your time.

[00:02:19] How do you give of your time? You know, when we think about giving to charity or giving to a church or giving to some other organization that we believe in, or that we support, we usually jump to giving money. Are, are we donating to them? Are we giving them money to do their services and that sort of thing.
[00:02:42] But the truth is you can also give back to the community. By giving of your time by giving of your skills and your expertise. You know, the truth is most nonprofits are constantly looking for volunteers. They're looking for people to give [00:03:00] of their time and serve and work in some way. And if you have some sort of specialized skills, you can also give of your time to use those skills.
[00:03:11] Because usually again, nonprofits have a hard time getting people to do the things that are needed to actually run them effectively and still be able to afford to do the things that they want to do to serve whatever group it is that they're serving. And the truth is it can be a kindness to give of your time if you're really giving of your time.
[00:03:36] See, oftentimes people think about. Giving of their time to a nonprofit or to an organization or to a charity that they believe in. And they think about it in terms of what they get. But to be a kindness, you have to look at it in terms of what you can give. And yet irony is if you go into it with that mindset of what can I do to [00:04:00] really help this organization that I believe in that I support the, the message that I feel is important in the world.
[00:04:09] You'll often get back way more than you ever could have expected because you'll get back connection. You'll get back a feeling of happiness. You'll get back a feeling of fulfillment. You'll get back a feeling of autonomy. You'll get back all sorts of feelings about how you have done a kindness for the world.
[00:04:32] See giving of your time, just like giving of your money. We're going to talk about on Friday is not all about a direct quote, return on investment. It's not about that. You go in and you give time and you get business or you go in and you get time and you get some sort of plaque or some sort of public recognition.
[00:04:52] Instead. It's often about the intangibles. It's about the emotions. It's about the feelings. It's about the things that you [00:05:00] get. From serving that you weren't even going into it, thinking about it's about also building relationships with people that may not be in your normal circle, the people outside of those that you would normally run into or talk to or interact with, because the truth is giving of your time to a charity toward the organization that you believe in.
[00:05:26] Well often challenge you to see the world a little bit different, and I would challenge you to sometimes serve for an organization that maybe challenges your worldview. If you drive down the road and you see homeless people, and you immediately think how everyone that's homeless is lazy or a drug addict are otherwise out there by choice.
[00:05:51] Then go serve in a homeless community for a while, get to know some of the people hear their story. And what you'll discover [00:06:00] is that your blanket feelings that allowed you to feel better about the fact that there were homeless people may not be right. That yes, there may be some folks that fit into the neat little box that you've created, but there's probably folks that don't as well.
[00:06:16] I know I found that myself, when I volunteered at various organizations, I've discovered that oftentimes what I thought was true about that particular group of people turned out to not be true at all. It turned out that my generalizations, my beliefs, my feelings about this group were wrong. And so you can challenge yourself to serve, not just in organizations that fit into a DEET little box in your mind, but branch out and go further a field.
[00:06:49] Look for groups that fall outside of your belief system. Look for feelings and places that don't necessarily seem to click right [00:07:00] away and find a way to serve around those groups and build relationships and ask questions. Because the truth is the funny thing is as you build relationship, as you build connection, then you'll discover that the time you give, not only helps you have a kindness that changes the world and serves other people and helps them get a little better off, but it changes you too.
[00:07:33] It makes you see the world differently. It makes you feel differently about others and about yourself. And as you can do that, it opens your mind to begin seeing things that perhaps you were blind to before. So how are you going to give of your time? Where are you going to serve as a volunteer, whether it's for a little bit, or for a long period of time.
[00:07:56] How can you get out into a community that you normally [00:08:00] wouldn't have contact with and build relationships and connection. Thanks for listening.
