Episode 539: Don’t Go Grow

Inspired Stewardship Podcast, Invest In Yourself, Stewardship of Talent

Join us today for an episode about the reason go and grow aren't what you think they are...

Today's episode is focused on balancing go with grow...

In this episode, we cover the feedback loop that is the framework for the podcast: Invest in Yourself, Invest in Others, Develop Your Influence, and Impact the World. And we relate this to the only partially true idea that you must believe you can do something before you can do it.  We talk about some of the different kinds of belief and I give you homework to help you change some of your limiting beliefs.

The inspired stewardship podcast with my friend Scott made her. The truth is, that's how you go is through growth, and that's how you grow is through going.
00:00:43 It's a feedback loop. You've gotta have both sides of the equation. So if all you ever do is study, you're not going to really get anywhere, and you're also not gonna actually grow welcome. And thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship. Podcasts. 00:01:35 I talk with you about why we confuse going and growing, how growth is the key to going where you want to go and how you can find the right balance between go and grow. You've heard me talk about developing your talent,
00:01:51 and one of the best ways to do that is through books. But if you're like most people today,
00:01:56 it's hard to find the time to read. And that's why today's podcast is brought to you by audible.

00:02:21 That's inspired stewardship dot com slash audible to get your free trial and listen to great books the same way you're listening to this podcast.
00:02:31 You know, if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, you've heard me talk about the idea that you've got to get in motion to really make things happen.
00:02:40 You've got to take action. You've got to get things going to be able to find out what you need to adjust to be able to make changes.
00:02:48 It's not enough to just sit back and always do self development and internal growth and work on your mindset.
00:02:56 You're really not gonna make progress till you also begin to take action. And the truth is, we often kind of confused these two things.
00:03:05 In a way, that's what I was just doing. See, the truth is that it's not mutually exclusive.
00:03:11 This isn't a choice of Do I get things going? Do I move forward, or do I work on myself and grow myself?
00:03:18 The short answer to that question is always, yes, you've got to be doing both. You've got to be going and growing,
00:03:27 but we often confuse the two. We think about self development. We think about spending time on our own mindset as being the action that moves the needle and yeah,
00:03:38 sometimes it can be. There are times in your life where you gotta learn a new skill or you've got to begin toe,
00:03:45 do something to be able to master something, to move yourself forward. But if all you do is learn about that in isolation,
00:03:53 and never put it into action. Then you won't really master it. I mean, let's just take a simplistic example,
00:04:00 right? The one that everybody always uses writing a bike. If all you ever did was read about howto ride a bike and watch videos on how to ride a bike and think about how to ride a bike and then you jumped on a bike,
00:04:14 you're not gonna be able to write it. Yeah, you might actually be a little quicker at learning than somebody who's never paid attention to anything or had any lessons at all and just dumps on a bike and begins to try to write it.
00:04:27 But at the end of the day, you're still gonna fall down. Instead, you have to do both.
00:04:33 You have toe talk to people about how to ride a bike. You gotta study how to ride a bike.
00:04:39 You gotta pay attention to how to ride a bike. But then you've actually got to jump on the bike and write it.
00:04:45 So the key to going where you want to go is growth, but its growth While you're putting it in action,
00:04:54 you've got to grow while you go that is how you grow. See, one of the things that I've run into with clients is they've spent years on self development.
00:05:07 They've read all the books, they've studied all of the videos, They've listened to the gurus. They paid attention to all sorts of stuff and they still haven't made progress.
00:05:18 And one of the things that we work on and coaching is. What are you doing to put this stuff into action?
00:05:24 It's not just enough to read the book. You've actually gotta put the book into action. You've got to do something with that knowledge.
00:05:31 Knowledge is not power. Knowledge applied is power. That's how you get the growth that you want. You've got to put the growth into action.
00:05:43 You've got to begin to do something with it. So what's the balance? How do we find the right balance between doing and learning?
00:05:55 There's kind of a cop out Answer here. The answer is, I don't think you ever find the right balance,
00:05:59 because I don't think there's one set answer that's true for all of your life. In fact, it comes and goes with phases.
00:06:06 When I first launched my business and began to have to really learn how to do that. I was doing a lot of growth.
00:06:13 I was spending a lot of time studying. I was reading books. I was listening to my gurus and coaches,
00:06:19 but I was also putting it in action. That's the balance. Are you doing both sides of that equation?
00:06:26 Are you spending some of your time learning something new? Are you spending some of your time finding new resource is,
00:06:33 Are you spending some of your time figuring out What is it that I need to know to move into the next phase of my life?
00:06:41 But are you also putting some of your time into growth? You know, if you think about it is a ratio,
00:06:47 I would say it's something like 80 or 90% go and 10 to 20% grow. That is how you go.
00:06:58 So when I say don't go grow, the truth is that's how you go is through growth, and that's how you grow is through going.
00:07:08 It's a feedback loop. You've gotta have both sides of the equation. So if all you ever do is study,
00:07:15 you're not going to really get anywhere, and you're also not gonna actually grow. You can't self develop me yourself into success.
00:07:26 You've also gotta put that stuff into action. And only out of that action comes the growth that then you can put into action again.
00:07:36 And that loop goes upwards instead of staying a straight line. So what are you doing to go so that you can grow?

  • How you can identify limiting beliefs and begin to change them....
  • and more.....
