[00:00:43] but my purpose for going on the show was to share my message and it wasn't necessarily for them to tune into the show. It was for them to find me afterwards so that I could share real life with them. But I use it as a tool to start the conversation. And they said, [00:01:00] Barbie, we don't care if people like you or hate.

[00:01:02] We just care if they like and share the episode.

[00:02:47] Barbie is a chronic pain educator, patient advocate and president of the international pain foundation. She is also a motivational speaker and bestselling author on pain topics. Her. [00:03:00] Reality shows and media appearances are used as a platform to help her become an EA patient advocate. And she presents at healthcare conferences, speaking, publicly sharing her story, educating and advocating for patients across the globe.

[00:03:16] Welcome to the show. Barbie,

[00:03:18] Barby Ingle: thank you so much for having me, Scott.

[00:03:20] Scott Maderer: So one of the questions that I like to ask everyone that comes on the show is this one, one of the ways that we think of as developing our influence as being a leader and you have stepped forward as a leader in your realm, but how do you actually define that word leadership?

[00:03:40] Barby Ingle: Oh man, a leader is somebody that. Strives to be the best that they can be, but also helps others strive to be the best that they can. And you're giving each other help up and being able to see in a [00:04:00] situation, being able to see the large, the macro. Vision and the micro vision and knowing when to focus in on something when to pull back and let other people focusing on something and realizing that it takes a team approach to accomplish many things and to accomplish great things.

[00:04:17] The leader is the one who steps up and finds the calm, finds the hope and offers the help even with. It seems like an insurmountable thing. And for me, a leader is the one who's leading the synergy. If one person tries to lift the rock, that's 500 pounds by themselves. If the leader tries to lift the 500 pound rock by themselves, they can't, but they can help guide everybody else.

[00:04:46] That's in that group to do what they need to do. To lift that 500 pound rock. That seems like something that can't be accomplished, but it can be in that leader is the one who leads it to happen using the [00:05:00] strengths and recognizing the talents of all the people around them. Just like in cheerleading, there's many different positions and all the girls or guys team co-members are on this team.

[00:05:11] The humans are on this team. Each has its own different role, but we still have co-captains and coaches that lead the team and leaders need leaders. W there is no leader besides God that has all the answers and being able to recognize that and using the team and recognizing, Hey. Susie. Hey Jeffrey.

[00:05:34] Hey Johnny. It's time to step up and put your part in. I know you have these talents and giving people that boost to be able to do and accomplish the things that need to get done.

[00:05:45] Scott Maderer: So what are the other experiences that you've had? As being on a reality TV show. So I got to ask what was that like?

[00:05:57] Barby Ingle: I've been on a couple of different shows [00:06:00] and what I've learned through doing them, and I love doing them, but I learned that reality is not real. And I remind my niece and my nephews about that all the time. It's like reality is not real. A seed of truth in what you're seeing in the reality shows, but then there's also a writer that's sitting there and their job is to create a vision and a picture or a storyline.

[00:06:25] So the first time you go through, they let you do it your way and they see your mannerisms and how this is going to go. The fifth or sixth time. You tape it, tape the scene, which they are taped multiple times. That's by the time you get to the fifth or sixth time, they have you saying and doing something that you would not do in your normal regular life, but they need to get this to be over the top.

[00:06:53] So people will tune in. To that episode.

[00:06:56] Scott Maderer: So they actually do that. So people will [00:07:00] tune in. Yes.

[00:07:01] Barby Ingle: And they told me, they said Barbie, the producers, before that I was on a TLC show and TLC is known for like sensationalism.

[00:07:11] But my purpose for going on the show was to share my message. And it wasn't necessarily for them to tune into the show. It was for them to find me afterwards so that I could share real life with them. But I use it as a tool to start the conversation. And they said, Barbie, we don't care if people like you or hate you.

[00:07:30] We just care for. And share the episode. If they have a negative emotion or a positive emotion, it doesn't matter. It's only if they click a button and have a reaction. And that is what their purpose was to get the reaction of people based on the story that they're telling. And then I was able to, when they, when the people did have the reaction, I was able to follow them on social media and step in and say [00:08:00] actually my husband is okay and I paid attention and I am a good wife to the best of my ability.

[00:08:08] And here's some of the tips and tools and things that I use in my life to make sure that my husband is okay. That I am okay. And and it really is just a story starter and a conversation starter. So when you see like Kim Kardashians get proposed to my Kris Humphries, they filmed. I that all the more for me, I filmed something six times before they got what they needed.

[00:08:37] For her, it probably was more than that, but he hadn't proposed in many different ways and they took the best cut. I can promise you. So just know that when you're watching reality, it's there for entertainment. Don't feel like, oh, this poor person or that poor person. There, there are seeds of truth she did get proposed to.

[00:08:58] But you only see the [00:09:00] one time that went with the storyline and the producers wanted to entertain you with right. And the editors

[00:09:07] Scott Maderer: and the

[00:09:07] Barby Ingle: editors and the whole crew that's involved with that. But when the producers left, cause they came in for TLC, they came in and took over our house and life and community and everything.

[00:09:17] So I'm in falling asleep. So when they left, I had a few days where I had to decompress and remind myself that I am an okay human and that my voice did matter. And I didn't know how to speak because by the end of the week, I was. How do I say this? What's going to connect with people. And I was trying to do it for their purpose, not for my own.

[00:09:43] I had to remind myself of these things as well. And and remind myself, this was a tool that I was using to help spread awareness about chronic pain and living with a chronic illness and what life was like.

[00:09:55] Scott Maderer: How did your faith intersect with this part of it? I just, it [00:10:00] just dawned on me as you're living and people are following you around with cameras how did your faith journey intersect with that?

[00:10:07] Barby Ingle: They actually didn't go to church with me or show too much of it during the process. It's.

[00:10:16] It's something that I have to share after. And I started coming. I started being compelled to share it. What I was doing. So if we were shooting a scene, I would be like, oh, really legitimately. That's not me. I can have fun. And like we, in one episode we had people like when they came into the house, I use cups that are really.

[00:10:43] Th that if I drop it, it's not going to break. Cause I had dropped so many cups and they would have have me make everybody sign their cups. So everybody knew at the party whose cup was whose it's Hey, everybody needs to know who you are. Don't forget. Jesus needs to know who you are.[00:11:00]

[00:11:00] Things like, like sprinkling it in to the conversation in whatever the fun thing is the entertainment. I was trying to show, I had to sprinkle it in. So you would see like a cross in the background or things like that, but they wouldn't necessarily want me to talk about religion. I had to show through my actions.

[00:11:23] How I was keeping my spirituality alive and active in that situation.

[00:11:29] Scott Maderer: So when you work as a health advocate how does your face show up there as well?

[00:11:34] Barby Ingle: Let me tell you The government came in when we first started our non-profit and they said you are not a a religious nonprofit.

[00:11:44] 5 0 1 C3. And you can, you have to remove all your Bible quotes and everything that you're doing. You have to remove it from your pamphlets and from your website. And since the lockdown, I, [00:12:00] God has worked so many ways in our life. I don't have to talk you, I, as the leader, I'm not supposed to talk about it.

[00:12:08] One I'm compelled to I have been bringing people into the works, like we've, we have a magazine that we put out every quarter and we have webinars and we have international pain summit, which we just added a few weeks ago November 11th through the 13th and. And doing these, the people who are coming to present and speak in a right are all people of faith and, or mostly people of faith that are coming forward and saying, I want to share, I want to be a part of this, and they're not ashamed of their story any way that they choose to.

[00:12:46] So I'm actually using other people's stories and journeys as a way to bring Christianity into our nonprofit and Sharon, my advocacy. In that way. And I've actually, without speaking [00:13:00] about religion, through mentoring patients, Had patients say I turned away from God. I felt like he, why would he do this to me?

[00:13:09] I lost my hope. And watching you live has given me a calling to go back to church to pick up the Bible and read it, or where do I start in asking me questions about my faith? And so just by me being a light without necessarily saying, I am a believer, I believe in Jesus, and this is what. People see that in me is, are asking how do you start reading the Bible?

[00:13:36] Like that book is so big at where do you see. I say, you don't have to ha you can start at the beginning. You can start at the end and go backwards. It doesn't matter if for me, I can, if I'm having a moment where I'm challenged, I can flip, open the Bible or go to my Bible app and just scroll through real quick and see where it stops.

[00:13:56] And it's usually the lesson that I needed in that [00:14:00] moment. And that's a good place to. No matter what it is only as you're doing and taking action because Jesus doesn't drive parked cars. We have to do our part just like when we go to the doctor's office and doing that and doing my part even without necessarily straight up talking about it.

[00:14:19] Other people are brought to you to learn and love Jesus because they see that light in.

[00:14:25] Scott Maderer: So as somebody who's had a chance to do some public, speaking of your own and bring in other speakers and this sort of thing. Do you have any tips for folks that want to use speaking as part of what they are feeling compelled and called to do?

[00:14:42] Barby Ingle: Absolutely. Number one, just start talking and you don't have to be perfect. You will learn. And you. Get more concise and be able to share your journey. Remember a few key talking points for that particular [00:15:00] talk in. Let the rest flow through you as it's supposed to. And what is supposed to come to light?

[00:15:06] Will I like to say, it's the seeds you need, and those seeds are planted as we talk. And as we share, and it might not seem like something you need to share, but it just happens to come up in the conversation that you're having. And it was the seed that the other person needed. And by sharing your story and just starting to talk, it will come to you and what you need to better society and humanity will come.

[00:15:36] As long as you're a doer, don't just be a human being. Be a human doer.
