[00:00:29] Scott Maderer: [00:00:29] less to what we just learned on Sunday. We don't have to it out during the week. We don't find the ways to show love to those people. Even those people that we don't like. Even the people that we don't agree with, we're still called to show love. Welcome and thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship podcast.

[00:01:14]And today's spiritual foundation episode about investing in yourself. I talk with you about second Peter chapter one verses 10 through 11. I also share how in context, this isn't really talking about your job and I talk about why your calling is vital, but indeed your career, your job may not have anything to do with your calling.
[00:01:39] So one of those passages that I've heard thrown around when we're talking about calling comes from second Peter chapter one verses 10 through 11, which says, therefore, my brothers and sisters make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom [00:02:00] of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
[00:02:02] And I've heard this used when people are talking about. Finding your calling. But the interesting thing is they often can found finding your calling with finding your job or your career and out of this, they also here in this idea that you're supposed to find the one perfect thing that fulfills all different parts of your being in this one job or career.
[00:02:27] But I want to back up a little bit. This passage actually starts a little before in verse three, where it says his divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. Through our knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these, he has given us his very great and precious promises so that through them, you may participate in the divine nature.
[00:02:50] Having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires for this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness, and to goodness knowledge [00:03:00] and to knowledge. Control and to self-control perseverance and a perseverance godliness and to godliness mutual affection and mutual affection love for, if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[00:03:19] But whoever does not have them as nearsighted and blind forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. And then it goes into verse 10. Therefore my brothers and sisters make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior.
[00:03:40] Jesus Christ. Notice that the context here isn't about our career, our job, or what we do instead, our context here is about growing yourself. It's about growing in knowledge, growing in self-control growing in faith, growing in goodness. And of course, growing in love, [00:04:00] all of these things are the direction that we're all called to do as a Christian.
[00:04:07] Now we can have different callings in terms of how we express our self-control and express our perseverance and express our love. But the fact is that we're all called to do these things. And I think a lot of times we confuse the expression. With the act we can fuse the doing with the job or the role or the opportunity.
[00:04:33] And it's one of the reasons that we begin to look for everything to be perfect. When in reality, we're told that if we're doing these things, we're going to be challenged. It's going to be difficult. It's not going to be an easy journey. Being a Christian is not an easy path, but it's a path that we're called.
[00:04:54] To do. We are called to develop ourselves through knowledge through [00:05:00] self-control through perseverance, through godliness, through mutual affection and through love and to keep increasing these over time. Another is to constantly be growing constantly, be developing your own mind, your own body and your own soul and your own spirit.
[00:05:17] And I think sometimes we forget that our actual calling is to love no matter what our current expression of that is, whether we're serving in a church in Sunday school or whether we're working a nine to five down at a convenience store. We're still called to show through those things.
[00:05:38] All of these tenets, all of these various characteristics, people need to be able to see the act of Christ in us each and every day. And yet we often lose track of that. It's why sometimes we begin to pay attention. On Monday less to what we just learned on Sunday. We don't act it out during the [00:06:00] week. We don't find the ways to show love to those people.
[00:06:03] Even those people that we don't like, even the people that we don't agree with, we're still called to show love. And sometimes that means even stepping away from someone for a time so that you don't end up. Damaging the possibility of a relationship. It re it involves being curious about others and how they think and how they feel.
[00:06:27] Truly curious, not just listening to others so that we can convince them that we're right. Not just sitting back and screaming louder, that what we think is true instead, we're actually called to constantly work on ourselves. More than we worry and judge and work on others. That is the calling that we've all been given.
[00:06:55] Thanks for listening.
