[00:00:51] Scott Maderer: By the way, if all you do is focus on the short term, you're gonna be in trouble. And if all you do is focus on the long term, you're going to be [00:01:00] in trouble. And I know people that sacrifice everything that they have today. For the hope that they have something better in the future. This is sacrificing everything that you got just so maybe in retirement, you can travel welcome.

[00:02:29] One of those conversations that comes up time after time is what does it mean to win with money? Is it about spending less? Is it about making more? How do you manage to get your money straight? How do you manage to get your money in a position where you really feel like you're doing well, that you're getting what you need, that you're taking care of, what you need to take care of?

[00:02:56] What is the mechanical way to do it? and the truth [00:03:00] is that it's not a mechanical way. The truth is it's as much about emotion. It's much about feelings and it's really about alignment. It's about looking at your money and figuring out is it aligned with my values and my priorities. This is coming up in my mind in part, because there's a lot of press right now about student loan forgiveness.

[00:03:23] And is it the right thing to do? And I've heard people saying maybe I should go ahead. And my young person is about to go off to college. Maybe I should get a student loan for them because then it's gonna be forgiven and I'll be getting free money. And the truth is it's. About the mechanics of the finances.

[00:03:42] It's about your values and your priorities. Why should your plan change based on what's happening in the world? It's about your plan and your alignment. Is this living out what you want to live? It's not just a money decision. It's not just a [00:04:00] finance decision. It's about both your short term and your long term values and goals.

[00:04:06] what is it that you really want your life to stand for? Both in the short term and in the long term? Yes. In the short term, maybe taking the student loan and getting it forgiven and using that money is good. But does it align to your long term values and goals? Does it set you up for doing the right thing?

[00:04:29] The next time a decision like this comes. And by the way, I'm not saying taking a student loan is good or bad. I'm not saying that taking a student loan right now, because there's the possibility that it's gonna be forgiven is good or bad. In fact, it's not about the math part of it, is that a way to make money or not make money.

[00:04:50] And it's not about the values maybe for you. This decision is in alignment with your priorities and values, or maybe it's. It's about [00:05:00] examining those values carefully and then making your decisions and your choices through the lens of your priorities and values. Not those set up by anyone outside of you, not by the larger world, not by what a particular political party says is good or bad, not by what others are looking out for, but instead what you.

[00:05:28] Is important. What you have identified is your, why your drive, your alignment, your pur purposes, by the way, if all you do is focus on the short term, you're gonna be in trouble. And if all you do is focus on the long term, you're going to be in trouble. And I know people that sacrifice everything that they have today.

[00:05:50] For the hope that they have something better in the future. This is sacrificing everything that you've got. Just so maybe in retirement you [00:06:00] can travel, but then what happens if your life changes, maybe you get ill, maybe you pass away and then you haven't lived today or in the future by the same token, if you constantly live in debt and.

[00:06:14] Try to get by on anything that you can get by. And all you're focused on is today, the short term pleasure. Then you don't have anything set, acted up for the future and you're going to have trouble. Then both extremes are a problem. Instead, you're looking for a way to align both your short term goals and your.

[00:06:37] I look for ways to maybe you can travel today in a small scale way and not sacrifice too much of the future possibilities, but enjoy some of it now looking for a way to thrive today and in the future is so important. We don't have to accept either extreme. We can find ways to live out [00:07:00] both our values today and our values in the future.

[00:07:05] Thanks for listening.
