[00:00:27] And one way to be inspired to do that is to listen to this, the inspired stewardship podcast with my friend, Scott.

[00:00:36] Scott Maderer: but the truth is it's outside of that comfortable place. That real growth happens. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about taking foolish risks. I'm not talking about gambling at the poker table, like James Bond and saying I'm all in. And if this doesn't work, it's a fatal mistake. I'm going to be gone and everything is.

[00:00:57] And now it's all burned [00:01:00] down around me. Welcome. And thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship podcasts. [00:01:20] Invest in others and develop your influence so that you can impact the world

[00:01:27] in today's episode about developing your influence through stewarding your talent. I talk with you about why you may be lying to yourself. I share several techniques to use, to begin, to stop lying to yourself. And I also share why this is connected to imposter. You've heard me talk about developing your talent and one of the best ways to do that is through books.

[00:01:51] But if you're like most people today, it's hard to find the time to read. And that's why today's podcast is brought to you by audible. [00:02:17] That's inspired stewardship.com/audible. To get your free trial and listen to great books the same way you're listening to this podcast. Yesterday. I talked about how we will lie to ourselves about how we use our time. And today I'm going to talk about how we often lie to ourselves in general, it fits into the larger pattern.

[00:02:40] And tomorrow I'm going to talk about how we lied to ourselves about our money, but the truth is we tend to lie to ourselves because we see. Comfort. We seek familiarity. We seek the status quo and we want to avoid anything that causes fear or discomfort or [00:03:00] pain. So we have a tendency to tell ourselves, limiting beliefs.

[00:03:04] We have a tendency to tell ourselves things that at first glance seem to make our life easier, seemed to make us more comfortable and will trick us into believing that lie is the truth. We tend to lie to ourselves at a lot of different ways. I've discovered over the years, many of these I've done myself and I've found clients who are doing others, but we try to fit ourselves into someone else's expectations into a mold that others have put us in.

[00:03:35] And so we lie to ourselves that this is what we need to do. This is the responsible adult thing to do. We try to lie to ourselves because we feel anxious and worried all the time. We feel like we need to stay in the familiar. Anything that causes us discomfort must be bad. We lie to ourselves because we say that thing that [00:04:00] we're passionate about will never make us any money.

[00:04:02] It's not something that we can do as a hobby or as a business. In fact, that thing that we feel passionate about, it's actually unfair for us to try to pursue. Because it's not responsible. It's not the right thing to do. We tend to lie to ourselves by often putting other people's needs above our own. Now don't get me wrong.

[00:04:25] I'm not talking about being caring and kind and taking care of other people that's important. But when you do it in a way that destroys you, that's not sustaining. That's a relationship or that something going on that isn't going to last long-term, it's not healthy. We tend to lie to ourselves by seeking out distractions so that we can get away from what's the real work that we need to do.

[00:04:53] We tend to distract ourselves with pleasure or fun and not do the things that we know [00:05:00] we really need to do. We tend to lie to ourselves by settling for things rather than striving for things. We confuse being content with being comfortable. Those actually aren't the same thing. We lie to ourselves in a lot of different ways, but what it really takes to stop lying to yourself as Curt.

[00:05:26] Courage to be uncomfortable, courage, to be a little bit afraid, courage to keep going forward, even though it's scary. And even though it's uncovering. We tend to stop lying to ourselves. When we take responsibility for what has happened, what is happening and what is going to happen, we stop thinking of ourselves as the victim, but begin thinking of ourselves as someone who can act on what's going, we have power, we have choice.

[00:05:57] We have decisions that we can [00:06:00] make. We take. Stop lying to ourselves by becoming active by moving forward, by taking action on those things that are really important to us, even those things that are hard. And we even do it by sometimes asking for help from other people by recognizing that maybe this is something we can't do alone.

[00:06:24] We actually have to recognize sometimes to stop lying to ourselves. We have to not just do the things that other people are doing or the things that seem right for someone else, but find the things that really are right for us. What is the calling that God has put on your heart? Not what have others said that calling is.

[00:06:47] And then as you do that, you make a decision and you begin to take action on that. This is the ways that we can stop lying to ourselves because the truth is [00:07:00] that lying to yourself is related to the topic we've talked about before, about imposter syndrome, this feeling that somehow I'll be found out, others will discover that I'm not as good.

[00:07:11] I don't know as much. I'm not as capable as they think I am. And as soon as they find it out, it's all gonna come crashing down. That's why we stay in that comfortable place, because we're afraid if we stretch outside of that comfortable place, then people will find us out. But the truth is it's outside of that comfortable place.

[00:07:30] That real growth happens. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about taking foolish risks. I'm not talking about gambling at the poker table, like James Bond and saying I'm all in. And if this doesn't work, it's a fatal mistake. I'm going to be. Gone and everything's less than now. It's all burned down around me.

[00:07:52] I'm not talking about being foolish. It is wise to plan and prepare, but it's also faithful to recognize [00:08:00] that we're often called to do something that's big. And last longer and way more than we think we're capable of that we can overcome those limits with God's help because that's the calling that we're being asked to do it.

[00:08:15] Does it depend on us alone. We can work with other people and we can lean on the power of the holy spirit, both to help us along the path. It's a weird balance. It's that both ind and mentality that I've talked about over and over again, this idea of it's not either or it's both, and that is where the power to change and to stop lying to yourself comes from thanks for listening.

[00:08:46] Thanks so much for listening to the inspired stewardship podcast as a subscriber and listener, we challenge you to not just sit back and passively listen, but act on what you've heard and [00:09:00] find a way to live your call.
