[00:01:17]and today's episode about investing in yourself by stewarding your time. I talk with you about why it's often more about energy management than time management. I share how you can pay attention to your energy levels. And I also share why at the end of the day, you should pay attention to your energy, or it will force you to pay attention.
[00:01:39] As we talk about stewarding your time. Wouldn't it be great. If you could support this podcast and do it without just taking too long, it turns out you can. All you have to do is we use inspired stewardship.com/amazon. When you're ready to make a purchase via Amazon and a small commission, we'll come back to support the show.
[00:01:57] Just that quick. If you enjoy the [00:02:00] show, when you are ready to buy from Amazon, just use inspired stewardship.com/amazon. All too often, we focus on managing our time, trying to get ourselves to be more productive by paying attention to what we're doing and how long it takes us to do it.
[00:02:18]We try to get more efficient and more effective in our use of time. We try to get more things done in less time. We try to do all sorts of things to make sure that we're using our time. What's interesting though, is part of what we have to do. If you're thinking about being productive. If you're thinking about using your time, is focus on your energy management focus on where are you putting your energy and how much energy do you have?
[00:02:49] See the truth is that energy is a finite resource. We only have so much mental energy. We only have so much physical energy to put forward to. [00:03:00] And if we're not taking care of ourselves, if we're not getting enough sleep, if we're not eating right, if we're not exercising, if we're not taking time out for family and friends and relationships, then our energy begins to wane.
[00:03:15] I think, as we've worked through COVID, I think a lot of people have discovered. Being online, for instance, can take a different kind of energy than being in a room together. And this is regardless of your personality, regardless of whether you're an introvert or an extrovert, regardless of whether you like being around people or that drains your energy.
[00:03:36] It's just true that the dynamics of being online is different than being offline. It's not even necessarily a value judgment. It's not a better or worse as much as it is that it's just different. And yet we have tried to cram just as many things or even more because, we don't have time in the car, we don't have transportation, so we can actually do more meetings back [00:04:00] to back in a zoom world than we could in an in-person world.
[00:04:05] The truth is that all of those things affect our mental and our physical energy. They cause us to begin to drain some of our time and energy away. And then what happens is with the time we do have left, we become less effective. We become less efficient. We get less done because we have less energy left that emotional and physical energy is a very real resource, just as surely as the clock hours on the day.
[00:04:36] You have to check in with your energy levels. You have to be able to be in tune with what's going on in your body and in your spirit in terms of energy. Are you hungry? Are you angry? Are you lonely? Are you tired? Are you sleeping? All of these are signs that your energy may be waning, that your energy may be draining, that it [00:05:00] may be time to step back and give yourself a little time and space to recharge your batteries.
[00:05:06]All of these emotional things of when you start getting short tempered with the people around you, when you begin to find yourself drifting, and you're trying to do some work that requires some focus and your focus begins to drain. All of these are signs that you need to check in with your energy.
[00:05:26] Diet and exercise and sleep are so important for maintaining your energy. And yet, usually those are the first things we sacrifice. We begin to skip meals. We begin to try to stay up later or get up earlier. We begin to try. To do things more instead of taking care to do things that actually recharge our batteries, we tend to sacrifice the very things that give us more energy first.
[00:05:56]At the end of the day, the truth is whenever you're [00:06:00] looking at the energy that you have and how efficient and effective it makes you, you can either pay attention to those energy levels are at some point, your body will make you pay attention. What will happen is at some point you'll step back and your body will just crash.
[00:06:19] You'll fall asleep in the middle of a meal. You'll end up getting sick or getting ill in some way that causes you to have to take some time off your body will make sure that you get that energy back at some point, because that's how our systems work. That's how our body works, but you can avoid that by paying attention to your energy and advance by paying attention to what's going on by making sure that you're actually getting enough sleep.
[00:06:51] And by the way enough sleep is usually more than most of us get by paying attention to the fact that you're eating well and [00:07:00] doing the things that you need to do from a diet perspective, you're not just eating junk food and loading up on caffeine and sugar and an attempt to keep going. And by making sure that we actually take care of.
[00:07:13] Of exercise, you actually get out and do some things that are physical activities as well. Because ironically, when you're tired doing some light physical activity actually sometimes brings your energy levels back up as opposed to draining them down. And yet we don't usually think of it that way. We think that we should just sit and vege and sometimes you should.
[00:07:38] But you also need to make sure that you're taking care of your physical exercise and activities as well. Thanks for listening.
[00:07:46]thanks so much for listening to the inspired stewardship podcast as a subscriber and listener, we challenge you to not just sit back and passively listen, but act on what you've heard and find [00:08:00] a way to live.
