Episode 779 Big Goals Are Never Easy
[00:00:00] Scott Maderer: [00:00:00] Thanks for joining me on episode 779 of the inspired stewardship podcast.
[00:00:09] RJ Jackson: [00:00:09] I'm RJ Jackson, the courage

[00:00:33] Scott Maderer: [00:00:33] but all along the way, you've got to make sure you implement tracking and you implement accountability that you
[00:00:39] measure what you're doing and you're hold yourself accountable
[00:00:42] RJ Jackson: [00:00:42] to pushing on that.
[00:00:43] Scott Maderer: [00:00:43] I guess the truth is
[00:00:45] RJ Jackson: [00:00:45] let's look back at that client that sets the 15 goal a month idea if they just went from two
[00:00:53] Scott Maderer: [00:00:53] to four.
[00:00:54] Doubling welcome. And thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship podcast. [00:01:28] Today's episode about investing in yourself through stewarding your talent. I talk to you with you about why, even though big goals, aren't easy. You should try to set at least some really big goals every year. Even this one, I share how to know how to achieve
[00:01:45] RJ Jackson: [00:01:45] or how not to achieve and why that
[00:01:47] Scott Maderer: [00:01:47] matters those goals.
[00:01:49] And I share a framework to stay
[00:01:50] RJ Jackson: [00:01:50] motivated to
[00:01:51] Scott Maderer: [00:01:51] actually follow through. You've heard me talk about developing your talent and what are the best ways to do that is through [00:02:00] books. But if you're like most people today, it's hard to find the time to read. And that's why today's podcast is brought to you by audible.

[00:02:20] RJ Jackson: [00:02:20] and you can pick one

[00:02:37]Big goals are not easy.
[00:02:39] RJ Jackson: [00:02:39] That's part of what makes them
[00:02:41] Scott Maderer: [00:02:41] big goals. When you sit down and you decide that you want to
[00:02:44] RJ Jackson: [00:02:44] do something massive, you want to make an impact. You want to make a big
[00:02:48] Scott Maderer: [00:02:48] change in your life.
[00:02:50] RJ Jackson: [00:02:50] It's
[00:02:50] Scott Maderer: [00:02:50] always intimidating. It's always scary. It always feels very uncomfortable. It feels like it's impossible.
[00:02:58] Like this will never get done. [00:03:00] And, we've talked before about smart goals and one way to interpret that is that. A and smart is attainable. And I think there is a lot of value and a lot of
[00:03:09] RJ Jackson: [00:03:09] good ideas behind sitting down and planning, mini goals that you know,
[00:03:16] Scott Maderer: [00:03:16] or a tape
[00:03:17] RJ Jackson: [00:03:17] attainable, that you can get them done.
[00:03:18]You can hit them this
[00:03:19] Scott Maderer: [00:03:19] year.
[00:03:20] RJ Jackson: [00:03:20] But I think you should have at least a
[00:03:22] Scott Maderer: [00:03:22] few areas of your life, whether it's in business, whether it's in personal life,
[00:03:27] RJ Jackson: [00:03:27] you should have a few things
[00:03:29] Scott Maderer: [00:03:29] where you focus each year
[00:03:31] RJ Jackson: [00:03:31] on trying to have a
[00:03:33] Scott Maderer: [00:03:33] big, hairy, audacious goal as
[00:03:36] RJ Jackson: [00:03:36] Jim Collins calls it
[00:03:38] Scott Maderer: [00:03:38] from good to great wait.
[00:03:39]
[00:03:39] RJ Jackson: [00:03:39] You should be able to set a goal that kind of tries to make you knock it out of the park.
[00:03:45] Scott Maderer: [00:03:45] Something.
[00:03:46] RJ Jackson: [00:03:46] That if you hit it, it's going to make a massive change.
[00:03:50] Scott Maderer: [00:03:50] And part of the reason for that, especially in a year like this, when we're all trying to reset is the real truth is when you set these really [00:04:00] big goals,
[00:04:00] RJ Jackson: [00:04:00] even if you fall
[00:04:01] Scott Maderer: [00:04:01] short,
[00:04:02] RJ Jackson: [00:04:02] you often achieve
[00:04:04] Scott Maderer: [00:04:04] real massive success.
[00:04:09] RJ Jackson: [00:04:09] Some people don't
[00:04:10] Scott Maderer: [00:04:10] set goals at all. Some people don't like the goal setting mindset, but the truth is hitting big goals
[00:04:17] RJ Jackson: [00:04:17] or not hitting them.
[00:04:19] Scott Maderer: [00:04:19] Doesn't matter what matters is what happens
[00:04:22] RJ Jackson: [00:04:22] to you because you set an aim
[00:04:25] Scott Maderer: [00:04:25] for big goals,
[00:04:27] RJ Jackson: [00:04:27] a big goal that may be so big that you can't even accomplishment. Even if you
[00:04:32] Scott Maderer: [00:04:32] miss it by a mile, it's still worth the risk.
[00:04:37] If especially you approach it with the right attitude. We'll talk some about that in a minute.
[00:04:43]RJ Jackson: [00:04:43] If you set a big goal, you begin to. Align
[00:04:47] Scott Maderer: [00:04:47] things and stretch what you believe is possible. You begin to
[00:04:51] RJ Jackson: [00:04:51] recognize that maybe you can do a lot
[00:04:53] Scott Maderer: [00:04:53] more. Let's say you're a business owner and it's relatively easy for you to add two clients a [00:05:00] month.
[00:05:00] This happens pretty much every month of the year, without a lot of effort, without a lot of work. And the truth is
[00:05:07] RJ Jackson: [00:05:07] you could actually have as many as
[00:05:09] Scott Maderer: [00:05:09] 10 clients a month that you onboard. So what if you set the goal of onboarding.
[00:05:15] RJ Jackson: [00:05:15] 15 clients a month. The interesting thing is immediately,
[00:05:19] Scott Maderer: [00:05:19] your brain has to look at it different.
[00:05:21] You have to recognize that you're going to have to run some experiments. You're going to have to try some things.
[00:05:26] RJ Jackson: [00:05:26] You're going to have to do something other than
[00:05:27] Scott Maderer: [00:05:27] just sit back and do what you've always done. There's no possible way you can achieve
[00:05:33] RJ Jackson: [00:05:33] it
[00:05:33] Scott Maderer: [00:05:33] without it. That's what
[00:05:35] RJ Jackson: [00:05:35] big goals do they fit?
[00:05:36] Force you
[00:05:37] Scott Maderer: [00:05:37] to test and
[00:05:38] RJ Jackson: [00:05:38] learn and adapt and make mistakes
[00:05:40] Scott Maderer: [00:05:40] and try again.
[00:05:41] RJ Jackson: [00:05:41] And what's interesting
[00:05:43] Scott Maderer: [00:05:43] is that will pay off dividends.
[00:05:45] RJ Jackson: [00:05:45] And the other thing is they
[00:05:46] Scott Maderer: [00:05:46] often cause us to emotionally
[00:05:49] RJ Jackson: [00:05:49] feel
[00:05:49] Scott Maderer: [00:05:49] relatively strong because the truth is when we're working towards a really big goal and often gives us a lot of emotional feedback.
[00:05:57] It gives us a feeling of we're [00:06:00] doing something that
[00:06:01] RJ Jackson: [00:06:01] matters
[00:06:02] Scott Maderer: [00:06:02] to do this though, to stay motivated, to work towards a goal that it's
[00:06:07] RJ Jackson: [00:06:07] entirely possible. You may not even hit. You have to be willing to embrace. The unknown. You have to be willing to be a little bit uncomfortable.
[00:06:17] Scott Maderer: [00:06:17] You have to work to get clarity on what is
[00:06:20] RJ Jackson: [00:06:20] this goal and what do you want to achieve?
[00:06:24] You have to begin to put into place
[00:06:26] Scott Maderer: [00:06:26] checkpoints or milestones and aim towards those. You have to learn with a real purpose. You have to
[00:06:34] RJ Jackson: [00:06:34] focus on
[00:06:35] Scott Maderer: [00:06:35] learning with just in time learning where you're just learning the next step. You're just staying one step ahead of yourself and you're learning. And then
[00:06:43] RJ Jackson: [00:06:43] applying that learning back immediately so that it
[00:06:47] Scott Maderer: [00:06:47] solidifies it.
[00:06:49] That's also where coaching
[00:06:51] RJ Jackson: [00:06:51] and feedback comes in handy because
[00:06:53] Scott Maderer: [00:06:53] there's a lot of studies that show that real learning occurs best
[00:06:57] RJ Jackson: [00:06:57] when you have coaching and
[00:06:59] feedback
[00:07:00] [00:06:59] Scott Maderer: [00:06:59] during that process.
[00:07:01] RJ Jackson: [00:07:01] And
[00:07:02] Scott Maderer: [00:07:02] that follow through,
[00:07:03] RJ Jackson: [00:07:03] having somebody who holds you accountable and pushes you
[00:07:07] Scott Maderer: [00:07:07] is a valuable when you've set really
[00:07:10] RJ Jackson: [00:07:10] big
[00:07:11] Scott Maderer: [00:07:11] goals.
[00:07:12] RJ Jackson: [00:07:12] And then you can begin
[00:07:13] Scott Maderer: [00:07:13] to systematize it and turn it into a habit. Because
[00:07:17] RJ Jackson: [00:07:17] once you begun to turn things into
[00:07:20] Scott Maderer: [00:07:20] unconscious learning where you just do it
[00:07:23] RJ Jackson: [00:07:23] automatically, then all of a sudden that big goal becomes something that you can do each and every year. And
[00:07:28] Scott Maderer: [00:07:28] now you're looking for a new. Big goal, but
[00:07:32] RJ Jackson: [00:07:32] all along the way, you've got to make sure you implement tracking and you implement accountability that you
[00:07:38] Scott Maderer: [00:07:38] measure what you're doing and you're
[00:07:40] RJ Jackson: [00:07:40] hold yourself accountable to pushing on that
[00:07:42] Scott Maderer: [00:07:42] because the truth is
[00:07:45] RJ Jackson: [00:07:45] let's look back at that client that sets the 15 goal a month idea.
[00:07:50] If they just went from two
[00:07:52] Scott Maderer: [00:07:52] to four.
[00:07:53] RJ Jackson: [00:07:53] Doubling that's a relatively easy goal. They could probably do that and make very
[00:07:59] Scott Maderer: [00:07:59] few [00:08:00] changes to how they operate.
[00:08:01] RJ Jackson: [00:08:01] But if they want to go from two to 15, that suddenly
[00:08:06] Scott Maderer: [00:08:06] means they have to make massive changes. And
[00:08:09] RJ Jackson: [00:08:09] what happens if they miss the goal? What happens if they only
[00:08:12] Scott Maderer: [00:08:12] get two thirds of the way there, they're
[00:08:14] RJ Jackson: [00:08:14] still getting 10 clients
[00:08:16] Scott Maderer: [00:08:16] a month, which is well over twice, what the tinier goal would give them.
[00:08:22] And the truth is this happens to us all the time. We often undersell our own abilities. We
[00:08:28] RJ Jackson: [00:08:28] often think that we can't
[00:08:30] Scott Maderer: [00:08:30] do it when in reality, we're holding ourselves back. So what are one or two areas of your life where you feel like you really need to push yourself this year? You really need to set a big goal.
[00:08:44] RJ Jackson: [00:08:44] And if you have those
[00:08:45] Scott Maderer: [00:08:45] and you need a coach, or you need someone to hold you accountable, I'd love to be that person. Thanks for listening.
