00:00:26 And one way to be inspired to do that is to listen to this, the inspired stewardship podcast with my good friends, Scott Mader Well, oftentimes we get so focused on one thing or one passion that we forget our other strengths. We forget the other things that we enjoy doing and have time to do. As an example, the last couple of years,
00:01:00 I've moved away from my regular reading habit. I haven't been doing as much of it. Welcome. And thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship podcast. 00:01:23 We'll learn to invest in yourself, invest in others and develop your influence so that you can impact the world. In today's episode about impacting the world through stewarding your talent. I talk with you about why passion isn't enough, but it's often the start. And I also share some things to do when your passion wanes, you've heard me talk about developing your talent and what are the best ways to do that is through books.

00:02:29 to get your free trial and listen to great books. The same way you're listening to this podcast. Find your passion. What's your passion. We all need a passion. You know, I've talked about this on the podcast and it is actually good advice. It is something that's true. We do need to know what our passion is and be able to find it and be able to live it out.
00:02:53 That is often where we start with living out. Our calling is finding that place where we are passionate, finding the things that we're interested in, finding the things that we really want to do. Finding the things that we love that give us energy. You know, one of the first things that I always start with, whether it's working with a client,
00:03:16 whether it's me, myself, is I always try to start what I'm setting goals. When I'm looking at what I want to do the next year, I try to find first the why behind it, if I could do it, why should I do it? Why is the driving purpose behind it? This is part of identifying our passion, but you also want to look at things that interest you,
00:03:42 things that are fun, things that you enjoy, and you want to get clear on what is it that you can add in these areas? What do you have to offer? What skills do you have? What knowledge do you have? What abilities do you have that you could offer to the world? What problems can you solve? And then you begin to create a plan and execute on that plan.
00:04:05 These are all things you do after you find your passion. But what happens when passion isn't enough? What happens when it gets hard? What happens whenever you begin to stall out or maybe begin to find those places where it just doesn't feel like the passion burns as bright anymore, that you're loving it as much anymore. What do you do when passion was enough to start?
00:04:34 But it's not enough to keep you going. It's not enough to drive you all the way to the finish line. What do you do when your passion wanes? You know, the truth is that happens to all of us from time to time, even with things that we truly love, even with things that we're really engaged in and enjoy doing this podcast has had ebbs and flows and my energy and my passion around it,
00:04:58 my business, everything has those sorts of ebbs and flows. And if you think about it, you've had them too. You've had projects that you've started, that you've gotten passionate about and energized about, and really ran out the gate going great guns. And then it came to a point where the passion wasn't enough to sustain you. It was enough to start,
00:05:19 but it wasn't enough to finish. So what do you do then? The first thing you want to do is be honest with yourself, sit down and take stock of what's going on. Figure out is it really a lack of passion or is it a lack of results? And if it's a lack of Results, what can you do different? What action can you take to drive yourself forward with Results?
00:05:45 What can you do next? What's the next step that you should be taken? What, what should you be doing today or tomorrow to be able to move forward effectively, you need to be able to see the bigger picture. You need to be able to be honest with yourself too. Is it, is it lack of passion or is it lack of effort?
00:06:09 Is it lack of ability? Is there a skill that you need or knowledge that you need or is it simply that, you know, yes, you're passionate about this, but you're not really putting the time and effort into it to make it happen. Is there dedication or hard work or a willingness to learn that you're missing? The second thing. And I think this one is sometimes the most important and the most overlooked.
00:06:34 Give yourself time and space for self-care. Oftentimes when you're passionate and you're driven and you're moving forward 110 miles per hour, you feel guilty for taking any time off. You feel guilty for stepping back. You feel guilty for giving yourself some rest, but the truth is yes, you need to hustle. You need to work hard, but you also have to take care of yourself.
00:07:01 You also have to find time for rest. If you feel overwhelmed and burned out, oftentimes it's because you're not giving yourself enough time for self care. You love what you're doing, but you're bouncing all over the place. You need to slow down and take some time to reflect and pause and give yourself time to breathe before you Move forward. As Well.
00:07:30 Oftentimes we get so focused on one thing or one passion that we forget our other strengths. We forget the other things that we enjoy doing and have time to do. As an example, the last couple of years, I've moved away from my regular reading habit. I haven't been doing as much of that. And honestly, it's something that I love to do,
00:07:50 and I get a lot of energy from it, but I've just cut it out of my life because of time. And I'm needing to add that back in next year because learning and synthesizing information from a lot of different sources is one of my strengths. Passion can start you on the project, but there's also wisdom and grit and dedication and knowledge that's needed.
00:08:14 And don't let your one passion overshadow everything else that you're good at, or that you want to do. As part of that, sometimes it's really good to take a step back and do something as a diversion. Now I want to be careful here. Diversion and distraction are not the same thing. Scrolling through Facebook is a distraction. A diversion is giving your brain something else to work on.
00:08:40 Maybe you need to start a different side project and have more than one thing going on at a time, maybe even three or four or five. When normally I would say focus on one and get it done. Sometimes if your passion is waning, what you need to do, actually have a couple of more things going on. And then lastly, and this is what is the most painful and the hardest to do.
00:09:03 Sometimes if your passion wanes, you need to recognize the fact that that's because you've moved on, you've got a different passion now, or the passion that you had for this thing doesn't exist anymore. And it's okay to say no to it and to move on to the next thing and find your new passion as well. Thanks for listening. So much for listening to the inspired stewardship podcast,
