Today's episode is focused on finding your reason for being in several zones if you'd like...

In today’s episode about investing in yourself through stewarding your talent, I talk with you about the concept of Ikigai or the Reason for Being, how this frame can help you find more than one thing that you are willing to do, and why this identifies things without saying one is less valuable than others.

And then you have a profession where you're paid, but you may also have things on the side that you do as a vocation. Welcome. And thank you for joining us on the inspired stewardship podcast.

We'll learn to invest in yourself, invest in others and develop your influence so that you can impact the world. And today's episode about investing in yourself through stewarding your talent.
00:01:25 I talk with you about the concept of a Kiki or the reason for being, I share how this can frame and how it, that framing can help you find more than one thing that you're willing and enjoy doing. And I talk about why this identifies things without actually putting a value on what is better or worse. One of the things that comes up for clients time and time again,
00:01:51 is this conflict that we sometimes have between, you know, what we're good at or what we love and what we can be paid for these ideas of, you know, should we live for our passion? How can I find my purpose by reason for being what is my reason for being, and one of the concepts that I've come across that I love using as a frame when I'm talking about this is actually a Japanese concept called a Keaggy.
00:02:20 I'm sure I'm pronouncing it wrong. I could guy, I think is also how I've heard it said. And honestly I'm not sure which is right, but it roughly translates as a reason for being. And if you think about this for a minute, it's this intersection between four different areas. You've probably seen these Venn diagrams before that say things like what you're good at,
00:02:43 what the world needs and what you can be paid for. And then, you know, in the center is something that you should be Doing. You know, that could be something that You could make money at, that you would still enjoy. And because the world needs it, it solves a problem. And what this does, it actually adds four circles.
00:03:01 So if you think about four circles that are all in the center, they overlap completely. But then there's a place where they overlap. Only two circles are where they overlap across three circles. And then in the center, all four overlap and those circles are at the top. What you love on the right, what the world needs at the bottom, what you can be paid for and on the left,
00:03:25 what you're good at. So we're watch you're good at and what you love overlaps. That's your passion. That's something that you truly love doing and you're good at it. It comes naturally to you and then at the bottom, what you're good at and what you can be paid for. That's a profession, that's a career. That's something that you can do for a long time.
00:03:46 You're you'll even be good at it, right? That's the whole point. You gain skills at it and you can be paid for it. There's nothing wrong by the way, with a passion project or a profession, both of those things serve a purpose. If you go to the top and you take what you love and you overlap it with what the world needs,
00:04:06 that's a mission. And again, people will serve a mission their entire life. They're oftentimes we'll find something that, you know, we call them missionaries, people that go out and they do mission work. And then what the world needs, where that overlaps what you can be paid for. That's a vocation, that's a calling. That's something that you're driven towards doing and in the center where they all four overlap perfectly.
00:04:32 That is a reason for being that is this concept because it points out that if you're living in that, what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs area up at the top, then you're, you're delighted. You have a sense of fullness, but you often have no wealth. And again, there's nothing wrong with that. This isn't a good or bad thing.
00:04:52 This isn't about putting a value on any of these areas. They're all good. They're just different. If you're living over there in that overlap between what you love, what you're good at and what you can be paid for, then you have satisfaction, but you don't really feel like you're making a big impact on the world or doing something meaningful. You feel sort of useless because you don't have that mission and that vocation,
00:05:19 you don't have what the world needs overlapping down at the bottom. If you're doing what you're good at, what you can be paid for and what the world needs, then you're comfortable because you've got money coming in. But you kind of have a feeling of emptiness because you're not doing what you really love. And if you're over on the right hand side,
00:05:40 doing what the world needs and what you love and what you can be paid for, then you have excitement. But there's a sense of uncertainty or nagging doubt. Like there's more out there because you're not really doing what you're good at. And the idea here is that everyone has something that hits that sweet spot in the center. That if you search hard enough and long enough,
00:06:05 you will find that thing that is in the center, you will find a reason for being and out of that reason for being that is where everything else flows from that. If you, if you look at this, you can see that a vocation is good. A profession is good. You can see that all of these things, passion, mission, all of them are good.
00:06:33 What you love is good. What's the world needs is good. What you can be paid for is good. What you're good at is good. But if you really want that kind of sweet spot in the center, you have to find the thing that overlaps all of those for me, coaching falls into this category. So did teaching, honestly, because I love doing it.
00:06:55 I think I'm reasonably good at it. I am paid for it and the world needs it. So it does hit that sweet spot. And if you stop and think you'll find parts of your life that hit that sweet spot for you, and you may have other parts that don't what the idea here is, is to begin asking yourself questions. What is it that you love in life?
00:07:20 Make a list? What is it that you're good at in life? What are the problems that the world has or the needs that the world has that you can meet and where in that circle are things that you can be paid for. And if you begin to slice and dice, everything that you've done and everything that you do in this way, that frame can let you find things that you want to do.
00:07:48 It also can let you assemble them piecemeal. In other words, you may have one part of your life that serves your passion. One part of your life that serves your mission. One part that is your profession. And one part that is your vocation and still have a sense of satisfaction. Even though they don't all come in one single package, you can still serve that area of your life by mixing and matching from these different categories.
00:08:13 That's one of the things I love about this. You, if you think about it, a passion is often our hobby. There's nothing wrong with that. This lets you see that your hobbies are serving that need in your life. And maybe you go on mission once a year or you do other things, missional work or volunteer work or other things that serve that mission and scratch that itch for yourself.
00:08:35 And then you have a profession where you're paid, but you may also have things on the side that you do as a vocation. That's one of the things I love about this, this four circle concept is it lets you identify the things as good and recognize that they're all good. There isn't a good or bad here. There is no wrong answer. Instead there's numerous right answers.
00:09:02 Now sometimes that can get overwhelming. And this is where working with others can help you filter through it. But as I've shown this concept to clients over the years, oftentimes they can kind of point to their life and they can go. This serves that overlap. And this serves that overlap and out of the two together, I have a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
00:09:22 That completes the picture. It gives me my reason for being. So it doesn't necessarily have to come in one package or in one place, but it is worth examining your life and make sure that you're not missing any of these places where these circles overlap.
