Join us today for an episode about why this phrase is never a good excuse...

Today's episode is focused on what to do and say instead of "I don't have Time for this"...

In today’s episode about developing your influence by stewarding your time, I talk with you about why saying I don't have time for that is a terrible excuse (and yes it's an excuse.) I share how you can stop using this excuse.  I also talk about what to do instead.

00:00:46 What you actually do is really what your priorities are. What are you spending your time and your money on? If I looked at your calendar and your checkbook, what would I see? Because what I see there will reflect your riel priorities. And if that's not what you want, If that's something that you look at and you go wait a minute. Welcome. Your time I talk with you about why I don't have time, for that is a terrible excuse how you can stop using that excuse and what are some things you can do instead,
00:01:54 as we talk about stewarding your time? Wouldn't it be great if you could support this podcast and do it without just taking too long?
00:02:01 It turns out you can't. All you have to do is use inspired stewardship dot com slash amazon when you're ready to make a purchase via Amazon,

00:02:18 just use inspired stewardship dot com slash amazon. I don't have time for that is one of those things that we say.
00:02:29 Often somebody comes up with a new opportunity, and we say I just don't have time for that right now,
00:02:36 or maybe it's time to get out and exercise and do a workout, and it's I just don't have time for that.
00:02:44 Maybe you want to eat healthier, but you just don't have time to do them meal prep and the shopping and the other steps that it takes to do that.
00:02:53 Or you don't have timeto clean house or work on things. And don't get me wrong. I say this,
00:02:59 too. We all do. From time to time, no pun intended. We will find ourselves looking up and thinking to ourselves,
00:03:07 You know, I just don't have time for that task And I've talked before about how I would challenge you right away to stop using that as an excuse.
00:03:20 Here's the thing When you begin to phrase things around, I don't have time for that in a very real way.
00:03:28 You're taking away your ability to make a choice. You're taking away your ability to be the one that actually takes control of your life and decides what you're going to do.
00:03:41 It's a terrible excuse, not so much because it's true or false, but because it's an excuse that takes away your power and your ability to do things.
00:03:54 It takes away your ability to make a decision about how you want to use your time. See, that's the interesting thing.
00:04:03 The truth is, we all have the same amount of time available to us. We all have 24 hours in a day.
00:04:09 We all have 168 hours in a week, and the real difference is not the amount of time, but rather what we choose to do with it.
00:04:20 It's the one thing that you can always do, and I've talked about this one before is Frame. I don't have enough time and replace that phrase with one of two other phrases.
00:04:31 One is This isn't a priority. This isn't important to me right now. By the way, that's not a value judgment.
00:04:40 It may be entirely possible that right now, working out is not at the top of your list of priorities.
00:04:48 But what's interesting is by saying, I'd love to work out, but it isn't a priority right now.
00:04:55 It forces you to again thinking about that a little differently. It forces you to think about that choice in a way that empowers you to change it now or to change it later to recognize that maybe this is a season in your life.
00:05:12 Or maybe it's a permanent decision and in each case to think about the consequences of that and decide whether or not that's something that you want toe actually have as a consequence in your life.
00:05:26 Similarly, you can also phrase it instead of it's not a priority. You can choose to phrase it as I choose to not do that and do this instead,
00:05:37 make it clear what the tradeoff is that you're making. What are you choosing to do instead of exercise?
00:05:44 Because by phrasing it that way again, it begins to give you the power to think about it and reframe it.
00:05:51 So, for instance, I don't have time to exercise right now because I choose to watch Netflix. That gives you a couple of possibilities.
00:05:59 One. You may look at that and go. You know what? Benji on Netflix is a bit of a poor choice versus actually working out.
00:06:10 You also may see that maybe you could do both of those things at once. You could put Netflix on your phone,
00:06:16 set it on the treadmill, and while you're walking and exercising on the treadmill, still watch your Netflix.
00:06:22 You could do both at once. You could tie them together in your mind so it gives you that ability to think about what you're doing and think about what you're doing.
00:06:32 Instead, what am I giving up and what am I getting? And then make a conscious decision about whether or not this is a good trade off whether or not this is something that you want now,
00:06:44 one caution that I want to give see? Oftentimes we'll talk about our priorities will say our family is our priority or friends or a priority are whatever our physical health is our priority.
00:06:58 Eating right is a priority. But the truth is it doesn't matter what you say your priorities are. What you actually do is really what your priorities are.
00:07:10 What are you spending your time and your money on? If I'd looked at your calendar and your checkbook,
00:07:16 what would I see? Because what I see there will reflect your riel priorities. And if that's not what you want,
00:07:25 if that's something that you look at and you go, Oh, wait a minute, I don't want that to be my priorities.
00:07:32 I don't want that to be what people look at and see that I'm doing well. In that case,
00:07:39 you have the power to choose to do something different. See, that's the key. The key is to recognize that you have the power to not use.
00:07:54 I don't have enough time as an excuse. You have the power to recognize that you have a choice.
00:08:03 You always have the power of choice unless someone is sitting there with a gun to your head, saying You can't exercise.
00:08:10 You have to watch Netflix instead. You have the power to choose, and as you choose as you choose you can reflect on.
00:08:20 Is that choice one that truly reflects what I want my priorities to be? Is that one that has good long term consequences or not?
00:08:30 And if it doesn't, then you can begin to build the systems and the habits and the processes in the routines that allow you to make different choices.
00:08:40 That's what happens all too often. It's not about what you choose one time it's about what you choose over and over and over again.
00:08:52 It's about the 1,000,000 tiny choices that you make each and every day that give us the power to change.
00:09:00 And that's why it's so important that you really reflect on your true priorities and you stop using. I don't have time for that as an excuse.
