[00:03:08] Grant Botma: Yeah, thanks for having me. It's

[00:03:09] Scott Maderer: gonna be fun. So grant, when you went into business way back at the beginning, what did you see the purpose behind the businesses that you started?

[00:03:18] Grant Botma: It's aligned with the purpose of my life. The purpose in my life is to love them. And as we talked about in a previous episode, it's all based on the great commission and that word and the great commission, the subject of the great commission is them. Who do we go to them? Who do we baptize them? Who do we serve them?

[00:03:38] So if my life is about loving them, then also my business needs to be about loving them, but because it's a business and we're serving in a very specific way, I can niche down my purpose, a little. At stewardship, we do home loans, insurance, and investments with wisdom and love. So we love people through finances.[00:04:00]

[00:04:00] That was the purpose of the business. And it's closely aligned with the purpose of my life and having those two things connected, man, it is a blast now. I Felt not necessarily, like I had a moment like Moses with the burning Bush or anything like that. But as I was going through Bible college and I was reading scripture I was going there to major in, in youth mysteries because I wanted to be a youth pastor, cuz my youth pastor was cool.

[00:04:28] But as I was working for different churches and how churches do, sometimes they leach off of the kids at the Bible college and make you put in all crazy hours. I recognize the people that were working at the church. They also have broken halos too, right? They're not all angels. And when you get to see how the hot dogs are made it changes a little.

[00:04:48] Your perspective on things. And it sure did for me as a kid going through college, and what I recognized is, man, I love serving at church and I love hanging out with kids and youth and growing them up and discipling them. But [00:05:00] I don't wanna work there. . And as I was reading scripture, I saw over and over again, how often this theme of stewardship and this theme of money was talked about and Jesus talked about money more than you talked about heaven or hell I'm like what is going on here or in love?

[00:05:17] Yeah. So I'm like why is he doing that? Oh, I know why. Cuz he loves us. he knew that money would be the number one. Cause for divorce, he knew that money would be one of the biggest reasons why we are disconnected from our spouse or even disconnected from our kids. And we can't spend time in the places that we want to spend time, but also if we do it right, money can be.

[00:05:41] A reason why you're connected with people or money can be something that empowers us to live a more impactful life. So I wanted to create a company that helped people with their money, so that money isn't something that prevents their life in their life purpose from being lived down, [00:06:00] but allows their life in their life purpose to be lived out better.

[00:06:02] Scott Maderer: So if somebody's hearing that and they're thinking about maybe. What their own purpose is or what their own impact is gonna be on the world. What are some of the top principles or ideas that you think people need to focus on to identify their purpose and where they are going to have an impact?

[00:06:24] Grant Botma: Yeah, I think that there are some things that a lot of people miss. When it comes to creating a purpose or a mission statement or a vision statement it's easy for us to want to go to a cabin for a weekend and be out in nature and come up with this grandiose statement with $30 words, and it might sound like a beautiful poem.

[00:06:47] The problem is it's not memorable and powerful purposes. Powerful mission statements are. They're easy to say, and that's where it needs [00:07:00] to end. It has to be simple. It has to be easy to say because it has to be repeated. And if it's this really long, drawn out statement again, that's beautiful with gigantic words, it's hard to repeat and it's hard to remember, but where it needs to start is that your purpose needs to be focused on others.

[00:07:19] It needs to be selfless. Because you can't invite other people to be a part of a purpose. That's all about you. People aren't gonna wanna to do. People aren't gonna want to be aligned with you. The boss' joke

[00:07:33] Scott Maderer: of I worked really hard this year and I got me a new Ferrari. If you work really hard again, this year, I'll get another one next year as opposed to yeah, exactly.

[00:07:41] Grant Botma: Negative for you, that, that doesn't work. Like imagine telling your kids and your spouse like, Hey my purpose at work is to make as much money as possible. So here comes a busy season. Support me. It's like that's not gonna do anything, but when I get to tell my kids Hey, I'm in a busy season right now.

[00:07:59] And one [00:08:00] of the reasons why I'm in this busy season is because daddy wrote this book and this book is about trying to love people. And what me and mommy do in this book is we share where we've made mistakes, but also where we've had some success in having a really great life of connectedness between family and between work.

[00:08:17] And we believe that this is gonna have a big impact on people, and they're also gonna be connected with their kids and their spouse. it's gonna be a beautiful thing. We're in a busy season right now to try to tell as many people as we can about that book. So if you support me well, that means other people will get to read this book and other people will have a positive impact on their life.

[00:08:34] This is our opportunity to love people better. It's different, right? It's different than, Hey I need you to help me make money. So the purpose has to be simple because you have to be able to repeat it, but it has to be selfless. It has to be selfless, but the last thing. The purpose has to be you. Some people might hear my purpose and my family's purpose, which is love them, love others.

[00:08:58] And they might say that sounds [00:09:00] great. I'll do that. And totally, if you wanna copy it, go for it. That's totally fine, but only do it. If it's connected to you, if that struck a chord with you, if it maybe stirs up some emotions within you, if it does the purpose doesn't mean anything to you then it's not gonna work for.

[00:09:17] I'm not saying it has to create this gigantic emotional moment where tears come to your eyes and you get the chills and you wonder if the holy spirit is moving or something like that. Can it do that? Sure. Is it gonna do that all the time when I talk about it? No you have to make sure that it is connected to who you are and the things that you care about.

[00:09:36] Scott Maderer: So I'm gonna ask you my favorite question that I like to ask folks let's say I invented this magic machine and I could pluck you out of the chair where you sit today and transport you into the future a hundred to 150 years. And through the magic of this machine, you were able to look back on everything you've left behind and all of the impacts and all of the ripples and all of the [00:10:00] connections that you've left behind.

[00:10:02] What impact do you hope you've left behind in the.

[00:10:05] Grant Botma: That they felt loved, but more importantly, they felt empowered to love others better. Sure. That, that I was able to love them. And they were able to feel love from me as my hope is with your listeners in this podcast. But man, more importantly I want them to be able to look back on, on my life and say man, I was able to love other people in my life, better be because of that.

[00:10:28] I wanted to be compound. So what's

[00:10:30] Scott Maderer: coming next for you is you go through this busy season and look at the rest of your year and what's coming up. What's on the.

[00:10:40] Grant Botma: Yeah. So in our business it's a mortgage brokerage and insurance agency and investment management firm and financial planning.

[00:10:46] We are actually gonna be adding some additional services to what we do. We have found a problem in our community with people that are trying to sell their current home and buy. Their next home and we've created a new product to make that easier so that they don't [00:11:00] have to try to figure out to live with in-laws between the two stages and make sure they can still get the most for their house.

[00:11:04] So we're gonna start a real estate program this year, and then next year we're actually gonna start a tax filing service to, to help people, to make sure that they can get their taxes filed with wisdom and love as well. There's also other things happening in our life. Personally, our kids are growing into the, this next stage.

[00:11:21] We're no longer always the. When we're talking to them, making sure that they're doing the right things and staying out of trouble. We're moving more into the role of coach. Our oldest daughter is 13. Our youngest son is, or our middle son is 11 and our youngest daughter is nine. And we're working hard on, on building a different kind of relationship with them.

[00:11:42] And it's a lot of. We aren't those parents who absolutely loved the baby stage , but we are absolutely me, either. My wife. Yeah. We did it and we made the most of it and we had fun with it, but we are absolutely enjoying this stage right now. And we're [00:12:00] excited to transition our role from cop to coach and see how we can help them make an impact on more people in their life as.
