[00:00:29] Scott Maderer: are these values that represent things that you would support, even if you were getting pushback, even with, if others were looking at you and saying that's not right. Is this a value that you would feel comfortable sharing with other people? And if it is that you've probably done a pretty good job of identifying what some of your common values are.

[00:01:19] And today's episode about investing in yourself through stewarding your talent. I talk with you about defining your values. I share both why you need to do this and how to actually go about doing it. You've heard me talk about developing your team. And what are the best ways to do that is through books.

I talk a lot about aligning your time and your money with your priorities and your values, but I don't think I've ever really talked about how do you actually go.

[00:02:29] Defining your values. And why might you want to do that for other reasons that the truth is your values help you recognize is your life in alignment with what you want it to be. And if not, then hopefully you can make changes in the. But if you never pay attention to what your values actually are, then you end up just doing things by inertia, spending money, spending time, spending energy, the way everyone else does it.

[00:02:59] You [00:03:00] decide more based on what is happening around you. Then what is happening inside? So thinking about questions, like what kind of career should I go after? What kind of job should I have? Should I take this promotion or not? Should I start my own business? Should I be firm on a position that I've taken or compromise?

[00:03:20] Should I do what everyone else is doing or travel down a new path actually happens in part because of you understanding what your values really. And this is something that you need to revisit throughout your life, because the truth is our values remain relatively stable, but they can change, especially if there's major life events that change in your life.

[00:03:47] Getting married, having children, having a spouse or a parent or a child pass away. All of these sorts of life events can cause us to adjust our reevaluate, [00:04:00] our values. How do you actually go about defining your values? Usually you'll hear recommendations like this, and this is what works well for most people.

[00:04:12] You want to get into a quiet place and spend some time by yourself alone. And then get out a piece of paper or open up a word processor on your computer and just brainstorm. What are times and examples that you were the most happy. Think about both your career and your personal life. Think about relationships.

[00:04:35] Think about activities. Think about all of the things that happened. Who were you with? What were you doing? What was it that made this a moment of happiness and then do the same thing, but think about when were the times that you were most proud, why were you proud? Were there other people involved? What were the [00:05:00] factors or the events that made you feel proud and then think about when were the times that you filled most fulfilled and satisfied when you felt like you were.

[00:05:13] The highest moments of fulfillment and satisfaction when everything was just firing on all cylinders, what need or desire was being fulfilled during that? Why did that give your life some sort of feeling of meaning and what were the factors around it that contributed to that? Once you've brainstormed all of those, and I do mean brainstorm and write a lot.

[00:05:42] Then you can go through there and begin to look for common factors. It may help to look up a list of common values online and you'll find list of 50 to a hundred of the common values that people have. Accountability, excellence, [00:06:00] freedom, fun. Self-development self-actualization different things.

[00:06:06] But look at your list and begin to look for about five to 10 of the values that seem to show up over and over again in these different categories. What are the commonalities? What are the things that keep bubbling up to the top? And once you've got it down to about 10, then rank order and pick out maybe your five top values.

[00:06:33] And then from that list of five, come up with your top three and then your top two and your top one, keep working it down until you can come up with this is the core value that at my center is most important. And then look back over that list of 10 and five and three and two and one. And are you proud of these or are these [00:07:00] values that feel good to you?

[00:07:03] Are these values that represent things that you would support, even if you were getting pushback, even with, if others were looking at you and saying that's not right. Is this a value that you would feel comfortable sharing with other people. And if it is that you've probably done a pretty good job of identifying what some of your common values are.

[00:07:26] And then of course you can look at your time and your money and look for alignment like we've talked about in other cases. But right now, just spend some time, take an hour or two or even three and identify what are your top values. Thanks for listening.
