Episode 1082: Messing Up Again

[00:01:10] And today's spiritual foundation episode about investing in others. I talk with you about Luke chapter 13, verses 31 through 35. I share how this passage and others are about how we can all meet. But I also share how that feeling we have when we get overcome by our own mistakes. Love is the actual solution.

[00:01:32] Luke 13 chapters, 31 through 35 goes like this at that very hour. Some Pharisees came and said to him, get away from here for Herod, wants to kill. He said to them, go and tell that Fox for me. Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow. And on the third day I finished my work yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of.

[00:01:59] [00:02:00] Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones, those who are sent to it, how often have I desired to gather your children together? As a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you were not willing see your houses left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes.

[00:02:18] When you say blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Yeah. We're continuing in this time of Lin. One of the things that I always reflect on during lint is about the idea that I screwed up. I know that may not be a big surprise. I talk a lot on the podcast about how I've messed up throughout my life.

[00:02:41] And I think a lot of times we hear people talk about messing up and that's the first reaction. Yeah. So what else is new? We all mess up. We do it with frightening regularity. In fact, it becomes a standard operating procedure for so many of us, [00:03:00] but this isn't about a confession. This is about looking at things in the greater scheme of things.

[00:03:08] The truth is that a lot of times the mess up, we have isn't that big of a deal, except that we find ourselves finding others and in ourselves disappointment and judgment, we see dismissal. We see. People looking at the mistake and seeing as if that is us seeing us defined by that mistake defined by our brokenness defined as a center.

[00:03:40] And the truth is we are sinners. All of us are we really make mistakes all of the time. And these experiences sometimes make us feel small. They make us feel insignificant. They make us feel unloved. It's a common [00:04:00] experience that we often have as human beings. And I'm not going to say that I know what other people's experiences feel like.

[00:04:09] In terms of how other people who aren't me, who've had a different background, a different experience have grown up in a different environment, what their path feels but I do think we have in common, oftentimes feeling. The fact that the ripples coming from our mistakes and our past choices stand out through us today and cause us to often feel small and empowered and unloved and unlovable.

[00:04:41] The truth is we feel like we're a long way from home and that we're the only person out there. When in reality, the human condition is one where we all often feel disconnected and unconnected to others. It is a common human [00:05:00] experience. We feel that there's a common feeling or a tragic feeling of mistakes and circumstances and our own failures or misunderstandings and all of these things that seem to drive a wedge between.

[00:05:16] Are often also something that we all have in common. And by letting it drive a wedge between us, it also drives a wedge between us and our relationship with God. It can drive us and cut us off from feeling connected to God. It doesn't actually disconnect us from God, but it makes. Feel dis connected. It makes us feel that our sin, our brokenness, our mistakes, our errors, all of these things would cause God to turn away from us and discussed our dismissal.

[00:05:53] And that is part of our human condition. That feeling of why have you forsaken me [00:06:00] that feeling of we've got to go forward and somehow, or another live this out, but we know how it's going to end. Just like this passage from Luke, how do we continue on and moments when we feel like we've been cut off from everything?

[00:06:20] The truth is we continue by recognizing that at the end of the day, that human experience, that feeling of mistake is one that we all have in common. And the truth is. We are loved, not despite that, but we are loved at all times with it, without it, no matter what has happened. The truth is that the passage about the Pharisees coming in and saying, Hey, watch out.

[00:06:48] These are the same people that throughout the Bible have been held up. Almost everyone looks at them sometimes as the bad guys, but they're really not. They seem to be the group that's trying to trip [00:07:00] Jesus up and here they're actually warning him that. Something's going wrong, you're going to be killed.

[00:07:08] And he tells them to go back and let them know, let the Fox and the hen house know that, Hey, even this has a limit because my love is greater than this, and I'm going to do what I have to do, and I know how it's going to end, but I'm going to do it anyway. And that feeling of love that Christ offers is one that we all need, because that is what lets us feel connected to each other.
